The Memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe was erected in the heart of Berlin in 2005 by the famous American architect Peter Eisenmann. The work consists of an outdoor site of 19,000 square metres, which is covered with 2,711 concrete slabs (or stelae) arranged in a grid formation, and an underground information centre which proposes a tour through the memorial sites.
In the Room of Places (Raum der Orte), witnesses of the holocaust sites can be seen and heard. The audiovisual media are illuminated by wall lamps from the Lucenera collection.
